Inflammation? Think Food First!

A healthy diet and active lifestyle are essential for many reasons. Let’s take an example that is rarely discussed: inflammation.

Do you remember the last time you had an infection? Inflammation would have been the natural response of a healthy body whose immune system began fighting off the harmful bacteria.

Unfortunately inflammation may become chronic in an unhealthy body; for this reason, diet is extremely important. Some foods will actually promote chronic inflammation, such as sugars and fats, whereas other healthy foods will help the body fight it.

One of the best foods for inflammation is fish—such as mackerel, tuna, salmon, and halibu— since they are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids lower inflammation by creating compounds that can regulate inflammation: these are called prostaglandins. The poorer saturated fats will have the opposite effect.

Another delicious way to fight inflammation is by eating blueberries, which are antioxidants.

You probably have heard that whole grains like oats lower bad cholesterol; for this reason, they also fight inflammation.

Have you ever heard of a spice called turmeric? This yellowish spice is a tasty way to defend your body against inflammation by adding it to your recipes.

In conclusion, when our bodies are healthy through good eating and activity, we not only feel good but our body goes to work for us in fighting off aches and pains like inflammation.

Once again, it’s food first!
